About the Design
Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) is shown in this self-portrait, gazing intently at her viewers. Anguissola was born to a noble Italian family and became a famous late Renaissance and Baroque artist, well-known for her many self-portraits - not a common subject for artists at the time. Also uncommon for the time, Anguissola studied under master artists, including Bernardino Campi, Bernardino Gatti (Il Sojaro), and Michelangelo...something no other woman is known to have done. She is now counted among the ranks of important painters of the early modern period, exhibited internationally.
Sofonisba Anguissola, Self-Portrait at the Easel, 1556, oil on canvas, 66 x 57 cm (Łańcut Castle).
